The Starry Messenger

The moon shines in my body, but my blind eyes cannot see it

~ Kabir

Our bodies are made of the same atoms and molecules as stones, water and air.
We are not observers on the outside looking in. We are on the inside too.

~ Alan Lightman

In the studio, I think about the atoms that make up all of everything – including my rocks and paint and paper – being impossibly small; they are mostly made up of empty space and are the journey-work of stars, as are we. The electron – the most basic of building blocks – is said to be everywhere at once and only by looking do we conjure its position. Niels Bohr said it’s as if there’s a curtain between the quantum world and us, and behind it there is no solid reality, just the potential for reality.
Things only become real when we pull back the curtain and look.

Noi viviamo sommersi nel fondo d’un pelago d’aria.
